The Italian writer Andrea Marcolongo, professing her love for the Ancient Greek language, once wrote:

“To tell about complex things in simple, genuine, sincere words – this is what the ancient Greek language is strong in.”

On the 19th of March 2025, DerKlub hosted the long-awaited lecture dedicated to the Ancient Greek language and its rich cultural heritage.

The speech of the amazing Lyudmila Ivanovna Shevchenko, Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor of the Department of German Philology, gathered a lot of interested participants who were looking forward to diving into the unique world of Ancient Greece.

In the course of the fascinating lecture, the participants…

  • learnt about the rich history of the Greek language, from antiquity to the present day;
  • learnt about the unique features and ‘oddities’ of the Ancient Greek language;
  • realised that learning Ancient Greek is not just about learning vocabulary and grammar, but a full immersion into the culture, philosophy and art of Ancient Greece;
  • and, finally, each of us gained a ‘superpower’ – recognition of a language that has been a source of inspiration to many for centuries!

The interactive elements of the lecture allowed our guests not only to listen, but also to actively participate in the discussion, ask questions and share their discoveries.

We hope that this lecture will inspire you to further study Ancient Greek language and culture!

We thank everyone who attended the lecture and hope to meet again at DerKlub!
