How did thousands of Nazi criminals escape justice in Latin America after World War II? Why is it still important 80 years later? On May 22, we talked about this at the final meeting of the IberAClub this academic year.
What happened?
- We watched the documentary “Without a statute of limitations. Rat Trails to the New World.”
- The cases of Adolf Eichmann, Edward Roschmann, Klaus Barbie and Josef Mengele were dismantled.: how they managed to hide and what it says about the post-war world order.
- We have found similarities in approaches to justice in the framework of various armed conflicts, for example, the Palestinian-Israeli or the internal armed conflict in Colombia.
Conclusions of the meeting:
- Justice has no statute of limitations. The search for truth remains an important mission that unites generations.
- Peace is not the absence of war, but a system built on trust, so society’s desire to learn the truth is the key to reconciliation and healing.
- Education and dialogue are the main tools against neglect and hatred. But, as the participants in the discussion noted, we should never forget about strengthening national intelligence agencies.
